reactor

The MBIR reactor facility is developed to comprehensively address the challenges of accelerated development of engineering, technologies, and scientific research in nuclear energy utilization. MBIR is essential as a key, and in some respects the only, element of ROSATOM's research infrastructure to ensure the development and verification of "new nuclear energy" and "low-carbon development" technologies. The creation of this unique research facility serves the achievement of national goals in compliance with the Government-approved list of initiatives for the socio-economic development of the Russian Federation until 2030

On 16 July 2025, the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan (INP AS RUz) became an official participant in Rosatom’s international research program based on the Generation IV reactor MBIR.
The conference focused on discussing current issues in fundamental and applied nuclear physics, nuclear power, development and application of nuclear technologies; it also aimed to expand international scientific cooperation.
Vasily Konstantinov, Director for International Scientific and Technical Projects at Rosatom State Corporation and General Director of Consortium Leader MBIR Reactor International Research Centre LLC, delivered a report on the capabilities of the multipurpose fast neutron reactor MBIR for testing innovative materials of Generation IV systems. The report outlined the progress of the MBIR project and its future applications.
On 14 October, within the conference framework, a ceremony was held to unveil a monument to Bekhzod Sadykovich Yuldashev, marking his 80th birthday.
B. S. Yuldashev, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, and Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, was an outstanding scientist and nuclear physicist who made a tremendous contribution to advancing research in high energy physics, training young specialists, fostering international cooperation. Those attending the monument unveiling included leaders from the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Agency for Atomic Energy under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Tashkent branch of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, as well as leading scientists from the republic and abroad. Participants honoured the memory of their distinguished colleague.
For reference:
MBIR is a multi-purpose fast neutron research reactor with sodium coolant and a thermal capacity of approximately 150 MW. The reactor is being built in the city of Dimitrovgrad at the site of JSC "SSC RIAR" (part of the scientific division of Rosatom State Corporation). In December 2024, the installation of technological equipment for the primary heat removal circuit and transport-technological systems of the research reactor began. The reactor is scheduled to be commissioned in 2028. It is expected that the unique capabilities of the new reactor will expand the study of technologies for two-component nuclear energy and closed fuel cycles, and will also help accelerate and justify the creation of safe fourth-generation nuclear power plants.
An International Research Center (IRC) MBIR is being formed based on the MBIR reactor. The scientific group will include Russian and foreign scientists and researchers. The center's activities will be carried out by the consortium "International Research Center based on the MBIR Reactor." The accession of new participants to the MBIR project occurs through the signing of a consortium agreement. This document legally formalizes the relations between the parties and fixes the rights and obligations of participants to use the MBIR reactor resource after its commissioning. Russian and foreign partners gain the opportunity to conduct experiments necessary for national programs for the peaceful development of atomic energy, without the need for direct ownership of the reactor facility and corresponding obligations to ensure its safe operation, as well as control and accounting of nuclear materials. This approach allows for flexible use of the reactor resource, meeting the needs of the scientific community participants.
